The Mountains are Silent as the Wind Howls Revisited - New Painting

The Mountains are Silent as the Wind Howls
The finished piece, revisited in 2025.
42 x 59.5 inches
Acrylic on Canvas

The Mountains are Silent as the Wind Howls
The piece, as created originally in 2021.

My painting experience while painting the piece above depicts what feels common to today's current events. Chaos all around me. The wind is blustering my canvas, moving my supplies, tossing the pieces of wood I had stacked on the canvas edges. I reckon with it, giving my greatest retort and my warmest sweet talk. Nothing would be heard by the wind that day. It was all powerful. But, the strength of the mountains is silent; they are unshakable by anything the wind can blow their way. They are unmoved by anything I say to them like, "and you're just going to stand there with nothing to say while I'm getting tossed around here"? Ha! The mountains are silent as the wind howls, waiting for me to settle down and begin painting.

I was excited to get outside to the land to paint. My painting location was the old abandoned salt mine with a beloved view.

Mother Nature doesn’t comply with my wishes for a peaceful time. On this day, no amount of declaration, soothsaying, or bargaining worked. The mountains stood there in silence, expecting me to begin. The painting session was exhilarating, with billowing plastic and flying canvas edges. Giggles ensued while playing with the elements at work. Dust, dirt, weed particles, and salt become part of this painting.

The 60 x 60-inch unstretched canvas is an enormous size for a Plein air painting. I laid it on the ground to work. There were old timbers and pieces of wood lying around, so I grabbed them to secure the corners. I placed it on a hill so the angle would tilt. It was a next-to-impossible task to paint that day as the wind howled, scoffing at me as I worked to secure the painting. I figured out the general layout, and the desired composition of the land, painting as best I could.

The Mountains are Silent as the Wind Howls

I’ve been Plein air painting for years. The new way of painting Plein air began about five paintings ago. Now, besides the small-size stretched canvas, I work on large-size flat raw canvas, either placed on the floor or on the land instead of working on an easel.

There are places on this painting, which to me, depict ancient Native American stories. These came forth during the painting process, much to my surprise. The old salt mine served as a ritual site for Hopi Native Americans before people developed it into a mining operation. Please take time to tune into the energy of this painting. It will be satisfying.

I painted this piece four years ago, leaving the painting in its raw state. I revisited it to refine it from that first visit to the land.

I’m told my Plein air paintings capture the spirit of the location. I believe I captured the experience of being there with the fierce wind howling and blowing my canvas all over the place. It was an untamable moment. My artwork depicts the vibrant, untamed spirit hidden within the tranquil mountain landscape, a place whispering ancient stories.

What do you think of this painting? Do you see any tales from the distant past expressed on this painting?

Ancestral Communication - Oil Painting Now Ready for Its Forever Home

Ancestral Communication

  • Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
  • 11 x 14 x 0.5 in
  • $400
  • Mary Rush

Since I painted the previous Plein air painting in monochrome hues of silver, bronze, gold, and beige, it was time to add color to the next painting.

I decided on a blue, purple, and green color scheme. The new process of painting an abstract underpainting is so exciting to me. It adds a spring to my step, and I can’t wait to begin the process.

Giddy with joy, immersed in the Southwest Arizona desert landscape, I was prepared to paint. This painting took the shape of the landscape naturally without trying. When I had the painting in front of me on the land, the mountains lined up with what I had randomly painted abstractly. Woo hoo! So much fun!

I grabbed the palette knife and mixed the paint to the sandy color of the desert floor. Slabs of the creamy beige appeared on top of the colorful abstract below it. I laid the paint down, following the formations of the mountains. I let the color show through in places to add surprise and wonder to the landscape scene. Two gold dots peek out boldly.

I love the shimmer of the metallic colors of bronze, gold, and silver in this color palette of blue, purple, green, and yellow.

When I look at the final painting, I hear drums beating in the distance as in ancestral communication.

New Painting - Seclusion

Final painting completed this week: Seclusion, 36 x 60 x 1.5 inches,
Oil on Canvas, Copyright 2017 Mary Gravelle aka MaryRae Rush
I completed my newest painting this past week.

I love this painting. I have been experimenting with painting with tools other than brushes to get the painting started, finishing it off with brushes as needed in more detailed areas.

I like the finished areas juxtaposed with the lesser evolved areas on this painting. I also love surprises that show up when I allow the painting to be what it wants to be, like the blue shape lower right.

What do you think? What do you like about this painting?

Below are in-process shots. Enjoy. Please leave a comment below.

Photo reference credit goes to Nick's Nature Pics Blog. He graciously permitted me to use his photo of the Turkey Vulture as reference while painting. Thanks, Nick!

New Painting Merges My Love of The Landscape and Animals

The set up.
Commissioned Painting, 18 x 36 inches.

Painting Studio Set Up

Nov. 11, 2014. I have been preparing for a new painting, a commissioned work. I set up my painting space today.

Under Painting

Commissioned Painting under painting in process, 18 x 36 inches.
Acrylic on canvas. Copyright Mary Rush (Mary Gravelle)
I did the under painting of the sky. After spending quite a bit of time in the initial pre-planning stages, it felt great to finally put paint on canvas!

Landscape Meets Animals

Also, I have to say that as I was painting today, I loved the idea of painting the landscape again. With this painting, my love of nature and the landscape merges with my love of animals.

The Landscape

The landscape is in Sedona, Arizona. The mountain is known as Bell Rock, one of the major vortex sites in Sedona.

The Animals

The animals are the buyer's cats, Dillon and Dexter. They are both Maine Coon cats and quite large.

My Sir Kitty is attempting to become their friends, so far unsuccessfully. I encourage him to keep trying. So far, Dexter just hisses at him. We'll see what happens over time.

So far, this painting is a delight.

Until Next Week

New Painting: The Meditation

The Meditation is painted from a scene of a sunset I saw while hiking Boston Hill of Silver City, New Mexico. Whew--More Work on CafePress.com Store

Wow. This online store is a lot of work and addicting. I added two new sections tonight: clocks and small framed prints. I'm happy with the quality of products that I'm adding. I think the store is looking better. I'm constantly upgrading and simplifying. Here are samples of new products in my cafepress.com/maryart store.

AdWords and my CafePress.com Store

I have taken the plunge with paid online advertising with Adwords by Google for my online store at CafePress.com, www.cafepress.com/maryart. I have been diligently upgrading and simplifying this store in hopes that when people do click on my ad, they will like what they see. I'm working hard at making it easy :) to find things in the store. This is a challenge as I said in a previous post. I've pictured a couple of products that I'm proud of -- 2008 Southwest Calendar, Simplicity Mouse pad, Simplicity Large Mug, and Simplicity Tile Coaster.

Seeking Sales & Representation

Today I'm seeking sales of my paintings and gallery representation. I'm working up an over sized postcard to send to Tubac, Arizona galleries to help launch my art career. See the pictures below for what my postcard looks like.

ARTIST STATEMENT ON POSTCARD READS: Since moving to the Southwest in July of 2006 from the Northeast, I have redirected my painting from inner symbolism to observation of the outside world. In pioneering mode, my new art is an adventure in exploring, seeing, expressing, expanding possibilities, and discovering new frontiers. The southwest landscape has captured my heart and imagination. I honor Nature in every new painting that I make partaking in a joyous symbiotic love affair. I work in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. I prefer working large (36" x 60") and am creating small works right now (8" x 10"). Mary A. Gravelle

<--> I painted, painted, painted.
I have completed 19 paintings since I left Connecticut on July 1, 2006. These were new painting adventures changing my style from abstract symbolism to outside observation of the southwest landscape. I don't know if that sounds like a lot to any of you. Believe me, it is a lot considering I moved cross country from Connecticut to Tucson, Arizona and then to Silver City, New Mexico where I have moved three times! This includes packing, moving, and two storage spaces. I have been mobile and yet have remained committed to my art.

<--> In addition to the art, I have fallen in love four times and broken up four times! Talk about creating and moving on ..... Whew, what a year!
