About the Current Fine Art Painting

Today's painting, the 3rd one so far, is from my Numbers mixed media series - Number 7: Seventh Heaven, 24 x 24 inches, mixed media on wood, framed in a wood frame. Copyright 2009 Mary Rush Gravelle.

Layers of swirled acrylic paints in pinks, gold, and silver depict the synthesized meaning of number seven. Alternating layers of transparent acrylic mediums add depth in beautiful texture. Pink glassy domes accent the painting giving it dimension. Number seven is about higher realms lifting thoughts Heavenly bound in pure loving blissful energy that defies definition. Art merges with spirituality in this sensuous acrylic mixed media painting.

Imagine Seventh Heaven hanging in the perfect place in your home or office. Which room would be best served by its soft-spoken strength, spirit, and beauty?

My Early Southwest Landscape Paintings

Simplicity, 48 x 48 Dyptych, Oil on Wood.

Today, I wanted to share two of my early landscape paintings I did when I first moved to the Southwest in 2006. The landscape blew me away. It was expansive and breathtaking. I had never painted a landscape painting before, nor had ever wanted to. But, I had to paint this beautiful landscape that I was excitedly photographing everyday in my awe of it.

It was a scary venture because I had just completed my fourth semester of painting at Manchester Community College in Manchester, Connecticut. My dear and awesomely talented painting professor, Rick Harden, dissuaded his students from painting landscape paintings. He said that one had to be really good at it because there are so many landscape painters already out there, not to mention the masters that we had studied.

As luck would have it, during many coffee shop visits, I befriended and enlisted the critique help of an art professor from Western New Mexico University, Dan Davidson. Anyone who knows Dan, knows he knows how to critique. It's his middle name. After several of his critiques, I decided I was good to go. One of his best comments to me was, "Well, at least you have some raw talent." Ha. Thanks, Dan! He helped me a lot, though. So, here we go...

A Visit with Salusa Glassworks Inc

Artists Open Studio Tour Prescott AZ
Oct 4, 5, 6, 2013

On my way to the park to walk Sir Kitty, I saw a sign that led me to the first studio, one that I had planned to visit after our walk.

memory serves me right.

I stopped in, met and, visited with Emma and Bandhu S. Dunham at Salusa Glassworks, Inc.

Emma is what every artist needs: the marketer, organizer, and generally the brains, nuts, and bolts behind the art. I enjoyed chatting with her and getting to know what the artists were doing.

They were demonstrating their craft of glass-blowing. Bandhu was busy making pickles under strict orders from Emma. They were short 150 pickles for a wholesale order.

The other artist, which I am sorry to say, I never got his name, was busy explaining to a studio visitor on making glass beads.

Other favorite glass projects are the spheres and glass houses. See photos.

Prescott Artists Open Studio Tour: Cathy Gibbons & Mary Schulte

Prescott Artist's Open Studio Tour
Oct 4, 5, 6, 2013

Cathy Gibbons and Mary Schulte
6th Street Studios
Prescott Arizona

Artist, Cathy Gibbons, and I share a common artistic inspiration. She, too, began painting the magnificent Arizona landscape after moving to Arizona.

I particularly liked her small landscapes, which were focused on smaller portions of the landscape, such as a flower or tree.

This makes sense since her favorite subject to paint is the portait. The mini landscapes are portraits of nature. Her love of the human portrait is apparent when viewing her paintings, examples surround her in the photo below.

Mary Schulte creates whimsical sculpture, mosaics, jewelry, and fiber arts.

I was drawn to her hand-dyed wearables. Some of the necklines received hand sewn treatments which endeared them to me.

I loved the pinks, browns, and beige toned items.
