The Throne of God - Oil Painting Now Dry and For Sale

The Throne of God at the Salt Mine
Acrylic and Oil on Canvas
14 x 11 x 0.5 inches

The Throne of God

  • Mixed media on Canvas
  • 14 x 11 x 0.5 in

A land formation at the salt mine conjures my imagination of being an enormously large chair where God sits. I always feel I am at God’s feet when I encounter it. He sits on his throne and watches over me as I hike and paint.

It’s always a thrill to hit the hiking trail with paints and an easel over my shoulder. As much as I love painting abstract, I love being in nature too. The new process marries both the abstract and the landscape. I have the best of both worlds now. It feels great.

The white, beige, metallic gold, and metallic silver color palette is subtle except for the highly contrasting lines.

Is This Painting for You?

The Throne of God Painting - 11 x 14 - Mixed Media on Canvas

The Throne of God painting and me, Mary Rush.

The Throne of God

  • Mixed media on Canvas
  • 14 x 11 x 0.5 in
  • Still wet, will be available in 2-6 months

Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to hit the painting Plein air trail again. I’m changing up my process. I hope you like the new look of my landscapes.

A land formation at the salt mine conjures my imagination of being an enormously large chair where God sits. It is in a direct line with my driveway. So, I always feel like I live at God’s feet. He (yes, my God is he) sits on his throne and watches over me.

The photo on the left is a scanned version of the center of the painting. I stand next to the full painting in the photo to the right. The metallic gold and silver, white, and beige color scheme is subtle except for the high contrasting lines.

It’s always a thrill to hit the hiking trail with paints and an easel in tow. As much as I love painting abstract, I love being in nature too. The new process marries both the abstract and the landscape. I have the best of both worlds now. It feels great.

Two Paintings in Process

Ready to painting at 2nd Saturday Art Walk.
The musician and lighting folks are setting up
for the evening's musical performance.
I'm working on two abstract paintings right now. They are both 36 x 48 x 1.5 inches on canvas.

The first one, I began last week, is a mixed media painting. So far, I have used paper, pine needles, a stick, and many acrylic skins. It's sheer process and loads of fun!

The second painting began Saturday night at the inaugural 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Sedona Village [of Oak Creek]. I was inspired by the backside of the Village Grind, a coffee house at the Collective Sedona. I'm loving how it's turning out so far. I think it's quite different than any other painting I have done since I don't typically paint buildings or architecture. There was music playing about an hour into the painting. I could feel the vibe of the music flowing with the paint. It was fun to paint outside on green grass.

I'll show you how they both end up in next week's blog post. That gives me a week to finish them both.

Have a lovely week.

My imagination can picture no fairer happiness than to continue living for art.

Dream Inspired Painting Series Based on Geometric Shapes as Light Source

    Triangle as Light Source
    36 x 36 x 1 Inches, Mixed Media on Wood. $1,550
    Copyright 2009 Mary Gravelle.

    Inspired Painting Series

Several years ago, I had a dream of geometric shapes as light source. I did a series of three paintings with this theme and idea of geometric shape as light source. It was a vivid dream when I was dreaming, but, as with most dreams, it faded when I wanted to recall the paintings.

    Triangle

The first of three paintings in that series was the triangle since I have a love affair with the triangle. This was fun to paint and required many layers of paint and acrylic medium. The technique used is one of put on and then take off, sanding between layers.

It must really be seen in person to enjoy the colors and texture. I would love to sell this painting to the right person.

    Circle as Light Source
    36 x 36 x 1 inches, Acrylic on Wood. $1,400.
    Copyright 2009 Mary Gravelle.

    Circle

The 2nd in the series was the circle. This one was much more challenging for some reason. I used only acrylic paint on this one.

    Square

The final painting in the series was the square. It was more fun than the circle. And it took a different turn than the triangle and circle. I used much gel medium along with acrylic paints.

    Square as Light Source
    48 x 48 inches, Acrylic on Wood, $2,800.

What do you think of this series?

Paintings for Sale at Welcome Center

Braylee Rush on the right with her paintings behind her
at the NEW Sedona Village Welcome Center.
The Sedona Village Welcome Center had its Grand Opening gala event on April 7. I was invited to hang a few paintings for sale. A percentage of each sale will go toward keeping the new welcome center open.

I didn't realize it, but I am a founder of this center. As a board member of the Sedona Village Business Association (SVBA), I volunteered to be on the committee to analyze the start up of a visitor's center in our part of Sedona.

We are situated outside the city limits and down the Red Rock Scenic Bypass from the main part of Sedona. This causes us to be slightly invisible to the five million annual tourists to Sedona. People coming in from Phoenix, however, drive right through our Village on their way to West Sedona and Uptown Sedona.

If you have traveled up State Route 179, you have witnessed the spectacular and breathtaking view of Sedona coming around a certain curve. This view captures interest and awe from everyone traveling from that direction. It causes red rock fever in the hearts of many.

The SVBA could not see the vision. We were being handed this opportunity to showcase our businesses by the new owner of a complex of buildings formerly known as Tequa Plaza. Thomas McPherson of Phoenix bought the complex after his car broke down coming through Sedona one day last November. He is extremely visionary and creative. He wanted a visitor's center in his complex. He offered the SVBA a great deal.

Since SVBA could not see the possibilities, Amadeus Larew, the person that volunteered to be general manager; I, as a committee member; Beverly Copen, President of the Vision Alliance; and Ken Rouse, President of SVBA all stepped forward and said, "YES" to getting this project off the ground. In three short weeks, it became a reality.

I look forward to the ongoing expansion of the vision of the Sedona Village Welcome Center.

Below are two more paintings now showing at the Welcome Center. All four paintings are mixed-media works of art.

The Dome Home Open House was a Success

Me, Braylee Rush (Mary Gravelle), with my painting,
Highways and Byways, at the Dome Home, Sedona.
The community open house for Sedona's most unique home is over that happened on Friday, August 21 from 12–5 pm.

Time will tell whether the event benefitted my art. I assume that it did simply because tons of people saw my art that had never seen it before. Exposure is always a good thing.

I introduced myself to folks and told them that the paintings hanging on the wall were mine. I handed out my business card. I received compliments on my art.

I did enjoy watching local photographer, Bud Ellis, photograph this home from every angle imaginable. Enjoy his superb photos shown here.

The event was an enjoyable afternoon. Many people stopped by, some came to see my art, some came because they have always been curious about this home, and others saw the flags for an open house and stopped by. Most were residents of Sedona or nearby towns. Others were visitors from out of state.

The realtors, Damian Bruno and Danielle Giann, Sedona Real Estate Agents, put on a classy affair with free food and live music. I would say all in all, everyone had a great time.

To see all my paintings that are showing in this home, please check my web page for further information.

    Damian Bruno, Listing Agent of
    Sedona Dome Home
My art is showing while the home is for sale
In July, I wrote about the open house as a great venue for artists to showcase their art. Now, the community gets a second chance to attend another open house to see one of Sedona's most unique homes, a dome home. And, you have another chance to see a collection of my abstract art hanging in this wonderful home.

My Abstract art in the Green Living Room which has a water feature.

Sedona Dome Home. This area was used a home school by
the builder and owner of the home.
Three of my small mixed media pieces fit the space perfectly.
You can watch several videos of the creation of this dome home on YouTube. Just google Sedona Dome Home and you'll find all sorts of videos from the building of it to the family of five that lived there while home schooling their three daughters. It's an intriguing story.

Here's the video invitation from Danielle Giann, partner listing agent.

Here's what Damian Bruno, the listing realtor, Coldwell Banker First Affiliate, of the home has to say:

    Newest Painting–New Day

Final. New Day, 12 x 12 inches, Mixed-media on Wood.
    Copyright Mary Gravelle.
I just finished this painting. I will need to sit with this one for awhile. I feel really ambivalent about it.

Photographing the nuances of the layers and textures proves futile. I'm not sure if you can see the underneath layers well enough in the photograph.

I experimented with texture both underneath the gesso layer and on layers over the initial underpainting.

It might have looked better before I added the final two layers, see number 3 below. And, it might have looked better than that before I added the two previous layers, see number 2 below.

I kept pushing it; I might have pushed it too far. I think I may have disrespected the integrity of this painting, effectively covering up its true essence.

    What do you think?

    3. Adding texture and paint, perhaps going too far
    with experimentation.
